These days, social media is a widespread place for us to connect with people, read news, share our posts, and connect with online people daily. However, spending too much time on social media turns distracting, leading us to isolate ourselves from a loved one and prevent us from completing tasks that need to be done promptly.
So, too much use of social media can lead to various issues, even though there are enormous benefits. Although the majority of peoples’ use of social media is non-problematic, a small percentage of users become addicted to social networking sites and engage in excessive or compulsive use. In fact, psychologists estimate that as many as 10-15% meet the criteria for social media addiction today globally. Social media addiction is a behavioral addiction characterized as being overly concerned about social media, driven by an uncontrollable urge to log on to or use social media, and devoting so much time and effort to social media that it impairs other important life areas. So it is essential to take frequent breaks when we feel like we are spending too much time on social media, even if it’s for a short period of time.
Health Advantages.
A break from social media improves significantly solves many health problems such as anxiety, depression, insomnia. Of course, when you take a break, there is no pressure to meet social media standards that you see every day- it can be difficult to feel like everyone around you have the perfect life when you see fabricated social media posts and news feeds.
Social media presents us with a distorted version of reality.
Most of what we see on social media doesn’t relate to positive thoughts or happy moments. I hardly see people post about the unhappy movements, struggles, or low points they deal with in everyday life. In reality, I’ve heard many stories from many people who told me that they are unhappy in the real world instead of those beautifully filtered pictures on their social media feed.
Social media helps you to focus on others more than yourself.
There are numerous benefits to using social media. First, it gives everyone a platform to publicize personal accomplishment and update, help advertise the business and foster your fame to famous but same time people publicize too much personal information and other stuff were uploading photos from many events or tweeting about an awesome new home, car, and other stuff, which automatically think us to compare ourselves to others.
The point to make here is we really should not pay attention to what others are doing, especially if we aren’t even close with them. Instead of wasting time exploring other private lives, it is always worth pursuing our own personal goals.
Gain a lot of free time.
I feel like I never have enough time to exercise, read, write and time with kids and spend time with family and friends. Now Putting social media on pause helps me regain my free time for productive things. In addition, giving my time to my lovely family offers me huge physical and mental health benefits, which makes it a much better usage of my time than scrolling through the Facebook news feed.
Sleep
So many of us are not getting enough sleep. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 35 percent of Americans don’t get the recommended seven hours of sleep a night. But when it comes time actually to go to sleep, so many of us get in our comfortable pajamas and cuddle up with our screen that emits the blue lights and messages that inhibit our sleep.
Yes, the light from our devices, particularly the blue light, is common which disruptive to sleep in itself. Blue light suppresses the body’s release of melatonin, a hormone that makes us feel drowsy. While this may be helpful during the day, it becomes unhelpful at night when we’re trying to sleep. Being exposed to blue light in the evening can trick our brain into thinking it’s still daytime, disrupting circadian rhythms and leaving us feeling alert instead of tired.
And given the impact sleep has on the rest of our health, it’s wise to find a way to detach your phone from your bedtime routine.
